Thermal sprayed coatings are already used for the wearprotection of cylinder bores since more than five years in theautomotive industry, primarily in Europe. The adhesion of thecoating on the different possible substrates is a key factor forthe success of this operation. This paper gives an overview ofthe different potential processes used for the surfacepreparation prior to coating deposition. The influence ofdifferent substrate materials will be discussed also. Aluminumcasting alloys, magnesium base materials, cast iron and alsosteel substrates will be considered in this paper. The safety andeconomical aspects of the different processes are consideredalso. Further, the paper will give an update of the state of theart of the thermal spraying of cylinder bores and the importantaspect regarding the saving of energy resource.
