In this work was studied the suitability of Solution/SuspensionPrecursors Plasma Spray (SPPS) technique to producetitanium dioxide (TiO2) and cerium doped barium zirconiumtitanate (Ce doped Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 or BZT) coatings. Theprecursors were sol-gel solutions typically employed toproduce powders of those compositions. We report on theformation of porous TiO2 coatings on stainless steel substrates.The microstructures found this coatings are characterized byfeatures typically found in solution precursor plasma sprayprocesses; a combination of melted and unmelted deposits andsmall hollow spheres. Transmission electron microscopyrevealed submicronanocrystalline features forming thosedeposits. Anatase was the main crystalline phase present in theTiO2 coatings. The rutile phase was also found in the coatings.The photocatalytic activity of the coatings was measured andcompared with the results obtained for commercial anatasepowders dispersed in liquid. Preliminary results obtained forCe doped Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 coatings deposited on mild steelsubstrates showed microstructures and crystalline phasessuitable for dielectric applications.
