Molecular modelling has been used in the design of new spirooxazine molecules for direct dyeing of textiles and leather and has also provided information to explain the phase dependent photochromic phenomena. Photochromic colour change depends on a number of factors, including the dye structure, the matrix and the surrounding environment. An evaluation of the technical performance on selected dyed fabrics shows good washfastness but only moderate photostability. This paper is part of a more extensive study of a series of photochromic acid dyes applied to silk, wool, nylon and leather in the presence of UV absorbers, anti-oxidants and other dyeing auxiliaries to enhance the photochromic colour build up and technical performance, the results of which will form the basis of future publications.
