The results of half cell experiments with Li/LiCoO2 ininorganic electrolyte solution indicate the stability, compatibility,and high rate capability of this system. The electrolyte solution has anacceptable conductivity of about 65 mS/cm at 25° C and can be used inthe range from -25 up to 70° C. Potentiodynamic cycling of the LiCoO2 electrode between 3.5 and 4.5 V versus Li show power losswith capacity decrease of 0.3% per cycle. Charging up to 5 V results inno degradation of the CoO2 electrode. In an overchargereaction Cl2 was evolved reacting with components tocompatible products. The formation of Cl2 at the Ni electrodewas shown by applying online electrochemical mass spectrometry. Lithiumcycle efficiencies of about 99% at 40 mA/cm2 were achieved
