Advanced lithium alloy/iron disulfide batteries optimized for highpower densities of 2.9 kW/kg are currently under development at SAFT.Configured as a bipolar array of sealed cells, 10 kW scalable modulesare under development operating at charge and discharge rates of 3 C and73 C, respectively. A high conductivity molten salt electrolyte was usedthat provides superior pulse capability in excess of 6 W/cm2.The electrolyte also serves as a separator layer with unlimited freezethaw capabilities. The electrochemistry consists of a lithium aluminumalloy negative electrode, iron disulfide positive electrode, andmagnesium oxide powder immobilized molten salt electrolyte. Pressedpowders were cold compacted into circular disks which were assembledinto bipolar cell hardware with peripheral ceramic seals. The resultsand discussions of tests performed on Li/FeS2 and batteriesduring the first year are reported
