The Overview of Hong Kong Gas Industry

The Hong Kong gas business derives all its raw material supplies entirely from external sources. Gas made up about 8.2% of Hong Kong's final energy in the form of town gas in 2005. The purpose of this paper is to review the current situation of the gas industry in Hong Kong and highlight some of the major changes that are taking place as a result of the adoption of environmentally-friendly technological processes. The residential and commercial sectors consume the majority of town gas, whilst a large swathe of the public vehicle sector relies on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The introduction of natural gas as partial feedstock in the manufacture of town gas is due in late 2006. As natural gas is already used by electricity power companies as a source of fuel in power generation, this additional town gas use will boost the energy efficiency and environmental performance of the utility sector generally. Besides, there has been a large development in the search for green business opportunities, especially by the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Ltd. (HKCG) the territory's dominant gas supplier, is keento develop greener ways to manufacture town gas. Following its first - and very successful - landfill gas utilization scheme initiated in 1999, the company is now about to commission a second treatment facility and pipeline link to harness landfill gas from one of the largest sites in the world. HKCG is also deeply committed to establishing city-gas businesses on the mainland where it can capitalize on its competent management and technology know-how to the benefit of supplying China's fast growing energy demand and helping to fulfill the central governments' intent to introduce natural gas into the energy mix as an environmentally clean fuel.
