Natural Gas as Feedstock for Town Gas Production

Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) will import natural gas as an additional feedstock for the production of town gas in the last quarter of 2006. Towngas, being the oldest utility in Hong Kong, was founded in 1862. In the past, coal and heavy oil were once used as feedstock for the production of town gas, and have been replaced by naphtha since 1973. As a responsible supplier of gas fuel, Towngas has been always looking for new feedstock to enhance cost-effectiveness, supply reliability and environmental benefits. The construction of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal in Shenzhen provided Towngas with an opportunity to diversify its feedstock supply. Under the 25-year sales contract, Towngas will be supplied with 0.33 million tonnes of natural gas per year, or equivalent to about 60% of the annual total fuel currently needed by Towngas for gas production. The gas production plant units have been modified to operate with dual-feedstock of natural gas and naphtha. In addition, two submarine pipelines are constructed for importing natural gas from the LNG receiving terminal in Shenzhen to the Tai Po Gas Plant.
