Brunei Shell Petroleum's Commitment towards Protection of the Environment Sustainable Development

Brunei Shell Petroleum sees itself as an important contributor to the energy market for natural gas, which is increasingly becoming the preferred energy source due to its economic, efficiency and environmental advantages, relative abundance and expanding infrastructure. The oil and gas industry will remain integral to Brunei Darussalam's economic development as well as contributing to meet the global energy needs. The contribution we make to sustainable development as an energy company can be looked at from three aspects. First, is to help meet the energy challenge. Second, is by working to improve the environmental performance of our operations, lowering our emissions and our impact on biodiversity and using less energy, water and other resources. Third, is by taking steps to improve our social performance - this means safeguarding the health and safety of our employees and neighbours, reducing disruption to the community, and create lasting economic benefits, for example by employing local people, using local contractors and suppliers. To help us address the environmental challenges, we have an Environmental Management System in place which is ISO14001 certified. This provides the Company guidance on how to conduct our activities in an environmentally acceptable manner and strive for continuous improvement. Undoubtedly among the foremost concern among environmentalist related to the energy industry is the issue of climate change brought about by greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect, Brunei Shell Petroleum has managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by over 50 per cent from its 1996 levels by substantially reducing contributions from venting and flaring and improving efficiency in our operations.
