Effect of Masonry Infills on Seismic Performance of RC Structures: A Case Study of Bam-Iran Telephone Center Building

A significant effect of infill walls was observed on the structural response of the building. It could be concluded that Bam telephone center building without the masonry infill walls would suffer large nonlinear deformations and damages during the earthquake. A maximum overall story drift ratio of 0.9% was obtained for the ground story of the building, which is less than a limit yielding drift ratio of 1%. Drift ratios for different damaged infill walls were obtained and compared with the observed responses. In most cases the comparisons lead to a fairly acceptable agreement Therefore, it might be concluded that the observed responses are almost correlated with the analytical results.
