Review of Fire Response Procedures for Defense Nuclear Facilities in Transition to Decommissioning or in Decommissioning

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board(Board) is an independent federal agencyestablished by Congress in 1988 to provide safetyoversight of defense nuclear facilities operated byDOE. The Board=s responsibilities includeoversight of activities to clean up and removenuclear materials from facilities that areundergoing closure, such as the Rocky FlatsClosure Project and the Plutonium FinishingPlant (PFP) at the Hanford site. This paperdiscusses the results of several staff reviewsrelated to procedures for responding to fires infacilities in transition from operations todecommissioning or facilities already indecommissioning.
