Development of A Darrieus-Savonius Hybrid Wind Turbine System

The wind turbine used in this study is a hybrid wind turbine which is combines a Savonius drag-type rotor in the rotation space of a Darrieus lift-type rotor and vertical axis wind turbine. It is a wind turbine in which a Darrieus-rotor carries out lift-type Toropskin form as the main power source, and combines a drag-type Savonius rotor on the same axis of rotation. This research is the result of a collaborative effort between Waseda University and the Nippon Institute of Technology since 1979. Later, field tests were run in Akita prefecture between 1980 and 1986. Furthermore, from 1987 to 1992, the wind tunnel experiments were carried out using a wind tunnel facility installed in the Nippon Institute of Technology for the experiments. In addition, in March of 2003, 1kW combined three bladed Dameus-Savonius hybrid wind turbine was installed in Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture and in February of 2004, 5kW combined three bladed Darrieus-Savonius hybrid wind turbine was installed on the roof of a 6-storey building at the Nippon Institute of Technology.
