The conceptual design requires efficient tools to come up with a number of workable and feasible designs with in a minimum span of time. In conceptual design phase the time constraint is balanced by foregoing some accuracy in the design results. Thus approximate methods are often used instead of lengthy in-depth time consuming computational analysis. This paper takes a look into a simple method for analysis of the thermal loads and skin temperature calculations for a hypersonic vehicle conceptual design. The paper first looks into the basic equations for reentry trajectory. Then a methodology has been discussed for the calculation of stagnation heat loads and the skin temperatures during flight. Semi empirical theories have been utilized for this purpose. This methodology gives the results quickly and is easily handled when coupled with the trajectory programs.
