FIGURES OF MERIT FOR HIGH-FREQUENCY SWITCHES

Defining and evaluating MOSFETs for power switchand rectifier applications can be facilitated by definingand identifying a figure of merit (FOM) for theapplication in question. The figure of merit useddepends entirely on the topology, and circuitconditions. For each MOSFET function in everyswitching regulator topology, a unique figure of meritcan be developed. Some examples used by the writersare provided herein in an effort to provide insight intothe switching processes involved when a powerMOSFET is turned on and off at very high frequencies.
