With the introduction of tension, in thin base plate, in addition to base plate failure, anchor bolt failure also occurs. In thick base plate, with tension, due to bolt failure in earlier stages, the moment resistance and energy absorption decreases. Compared with no axial loading case, the moment capacity increases with the application of compression and decreases with tension. It is also concluded that the resistance of column bases to seismic excitations is much governed by failure of the anchor bolts rather than base plate failure, especially under tension.
