摘要

The majority of the destructed buildings in Bam were masonry and adobe structures, those with no seismic design. On the other hand, buildings with reinforcement or ties, even if they were not well designed, experienced considerable low rates of damage. It is also notable that in all observed structures, fragile bricks were used for partitioning, which might be one of the causes for huge casualties. The two main problems, observed for steel frame structures with bracing, can be summarized as imperfect welding or insufficient bracing. Low damage rates for buildings, constructed after practicing seismic code, show progresses on reducing buildings seismic vulnerability in the area. Input directivity was observed through the damages directions of surveyed buildings, with larger residual displacements and damages in east-west direction.
