A method of computing interstory drift (ID) due to cantilever action in tall buildings, subjectto lateral load, is presented in this paper. The superiority of this method is that interstory drift is directlycalculated in terms of lateral load instead of overturning moment. Another capability is that a meaningfulcorrelation exists between the parameters in different floors, and thereby the volume of calculation isgreatly reduced. Additionally the influence coefficient of lateral forces in different heights to interstory driftis defined.Finally this method directly calculates lateral deflection of the top story relative to the bottom ofthe story (δ) which is suitable for a second – order frame analysis .
