摘要

Sedimentation in the irrigation canals is one of the important problems in the exploitationof any irrigation project. This problem has many direct and indirect effects on the hydrauliccharacteristics and economical considerations of canals. The main objectives of the research were tostudy the influence of the transported sediments on the hydraulic capacity of the canals, to examinethe various existing theories and relationships for determining the settling and non-settling velocities inthe irrigation canals, and to recommend the best possible and economical solutions to avoidsedimentation process in the irrigation canals. The results showed that the Limiting ConcentrationTheory and the Kennedy method had the best agreement with the measured values and thus, can beused in the design of irrigation canals to avoid the sedimentation process. By regulating the watersurface elevation in the canals and monitoring the concentration of the sediments in the enteringwater, it would be possible to create the non-settling velocity conditions in the canals.
