Transient modeling equations to be used for leak detection in municipal waterdistribution systems are developed. Data filtering techniques for the model will not be dealt with.However, since the model is derived for filter implementation, these techniques will be discussed.A transient model is developed from the method of characteristics, MOC. Continuity at eachspatial step, within the MOC, is then used to model an array of leak states. The goal of theauthors is to first develop a simulation of an actual system, simulate leakage within this modeland then use a leak detection scheme along with stochastic estimation techniques to estimateleakage. These methods can then be implemented with real measurements from the SaskatoonEast raw water distribution system.
