It has been determined that the City of Saskatoon's existing raw water intake and pumpingfacilities on the South Saskatchewan River, which are shared with Sask Power Corporation at the QueenElizabeth Power Station, cannot be further expanded effectively. Associated Engineering (AE) werecommissioned to undertake a study to locate and assess the feasibility of constructing a new raw waterintake system on the river that is capable of supplying the City's long-term raw water needs.northwest hydraulic consultants (nhc) were retained by AE in early 2001 to conduct an intake feasibilitystudy of seven potential locations. Following site selection, nhc were further retained by AE in August2003 to conduct river engineering services and physical hydraulic model studies for the proposed rawwater intake and pumping facilities to ensure satisfactory hydraulic performance over its expected lifespan.nhc are currently assisting AE with the intake design to ensure that the structure will be suitable from botha hydraulics and fisheries perspective. Furthermore, nhc are providing guidance in determining the preciselocation of the intake structure so that it remains operational over the expected lifespan. A mobile bed riverphysical model has been constructed and will be utilized to ensure satisfactory performance of theproposed geometric configuration for the intake structure. In addition, physical modelling of the proposedpump sump structure will determine if its initial configuration provides adequate approach hydraulics anduniform flow distribution to the pumps during all modes of operation will be conducted once the design ofthe intake structure has been finalized.This purpose of the poster presentation (without an accompanying paper) will be to present the keycomponents of the overall study from site selection to recommended design modifications for bothphysical model studies. It is anticipated that a majority of the key components for this particular study willhave been completed by June 2004. Information from the river engineering assessment and results fromthe physical hydraulic model studies will be discussed and illustrated in detail in the poster presentation.
