IMPROVEMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH REQUIREMENTS CONCERNINGCONTAMINATION LEVELS SINCE 1998 IN SWITZERLAND

In 1998, it became known that contaminations exceeding the limits of IAEA SS6/TS-R-1 werefrequently observed on transports of spent fuel from Switzerland to reprocessing plants in France andin the United Kingdom. Transports of unloaded flasks were also affected. A number of measures wereimposed by the Competent Authorities of the countries concerned. In Switzerland, technical,radiological and organizational measures were implemented. Between August 1999 and October 2002,40 transports of spent fuel and vitrified high level waste were carried out within, from and toSwitzerland. No contamination above the regulatory limits were observed, showing the effect of themeasures taken and also the increased attention paid by the operators to the issue of contamination.
