J-lay collars are a safe and reliable way to install very heavy pipelines. In order to increase cost effectiveness and enable better quality control of the collar piece, a new concept of collar is proposed. The collar will contain multiple rims. The novel concept includes the total hang off load to be shared between two or more rims. This allows for a significant reduction of the overall wall thickness of the collar, which in turn provides opportunities for use of thick walled pipe, improved quality assurance as well as operational advantages with respect to weldability, transport over rollers and field joint coating.
