Determining an Appropriate Pore-Pressure Estimation Strategy

A procedure is presented for using wireline or MWD data tornidentify when high pressure techniques are necessary tornpredict pore pressures inside velocity reversals. Shale sonicrnvelocity and density data are smoothed and cross-plotted. Ifrnthe reversal data lie on the same trend as points from lowerrnpressure intervals, shale pore pressures can be computed withrnan Equivalent Depth approach. A high pressure technique isrnnecessary when the reversal velocities track a slower trend.
