COATING DEVELOPMENT FOR SILT EROSION

GE Hydro has significantly accelerated their effort to help solve sand erosion problems for Hydro customers. The focus of the program is the development of new materials and processes for creating improved erosion resistant coatings. Significant progress has been made to; develop new materials and processes, evaluate five different types of commonly used erosion tests and to field test coatings.Solutions are being developed for all major customer issues. Areas of focus for coating development are on unique WCCoCr structures using non-conventional thermal spray and elastomers using a paint process. A non-line-of-site process is also in development for coating component areas that cannot be accessed using standard thermal spray technologies but is not discussed in this paper. A wet ring type erosion test has shown more than 4 times improvement in erosion resistance of the new WCCoCr structures over the state of the art coating. The same test has shown the new elastomer coatings to be 20 times better in erosion resistance than standard martensitic stainless steel and 15 times better than a state of the art commercially available soft coating presently being used for Hydro erosion problems.
