We discuss the implementation of a reliability database within a project-orientated defence and aerospace organisation. It is important to convince project managers about the level of operational data required for reliability analysis. The paper considers two data sets and a selection of reliability models for illustrative purposes. Experience shows that project related challenges often make it difficult to obtain sufficient reliability data. Military confidentiality, for example, can limit the amount of information available for analysis. It is also difficult for organisations that are not the main contractor in a project to communicate with the end users that experience reliability problems. We discuss these challenges and give an example of a typical data set that can result. The paper also addresses who should be responsible in the organisation for collecting the data and how a central reliability database can be used to keep historic reliability data for future projects.
