ARAMIS project: the severity index

A severity index has been devised to allow the establishment of the risk level originated by a given installation. Taking into account the values of the threshold levels used in several European countries, the effects (thermal radiation, overpressure, missiles and toxic effects) of the main major events have been classified into four categories. Specific severity indexes have been defined for these major events as a function of the intensity of their effects at a given distance. The severity index (S) is finally calculated by using these specific indexes and the probability of occurrence of the diverse dangerous phenomena. The S index is calculated for a given case.
