Assessing the effect of safety management efficiency on industrial risk

One of the parts of the ARAMIS project concerns assessment of safety management efficiency and its effect on the calculation of the external risks of Seveso-establishments. The aim of safety management is to implement and maintain a series of barriers that prevent and mitigate accidents. The quality of safety management depends on the selection of the barriers and the organizational structures and processes that ensure that the barriers fulfill their purpose. The quality of these structures and processes can be reviewed by auditing them directly, but the safety culture and learning ability of the organization have an important influence on the effectiveness of the safety management and these and their mutual interaction are harder to assess directly. The ARAMIS project will pay equal attention to measuring all three aspects; safety management structures, processes and safety culture.
