In a continuing collaboration with an industrial partner, we have developed a statistical method, the BGM approach, using Bayesian graphical models to support software testers and managers in dealing with the uncertainties in testing, including automatic design of test suites. There is a wide variety of benefits of using the BGM approach, which we briefly review in this paper, but there are also some costs involved in using it, e.g. in creation of the models and elicitation of the probabilities involved. In this paper, we discuss aspects that should be taken into account when assessing viability of this approach for particular projects, and we suggest general guidelines for deciding on the possible impact, benefits, and costs of implementing the BGM approach.
