Ettringite formation typically occurs when calcium based stabilizers are used to treat natural sulfate rich soils. This formation in the stabilized soils is linked to sulfate induced heaving, which has been affecting several civil and transportation infrastructures such as roads, buildings and embankments. Several case studies are listed in this paper, which described sulfate heaving distress problems in the literature. This paper also presents an overview of soil and stabilizer conditions that lead to ettringite formation in soils. Factors including soil compaction moisture content and dry unit weights, sulfate levels and stabilizer dosages, types and solubility ofsulfates, curing types, and curing at elevated temperature conditions and their influence on sulfate heaving in soils are explained.
