Potentialities of a Geotechnical Database in a GIS Environment of the Northern Part of Rio Grande Do Sul State - Brazil

The structuring of a database in geotechnical studies is of great importance for storing information as well as to make it easier to compare geotechnical properties observed in a certain region. A database can also provide a better understanding of soil behavior when used in connection with a Geographic Information System (GIS). This work describes the structural development of a geotechnical database that utilizes information of the northern part of Rio Grande do Sul state soils. The developed database, employed with a GIS tool, aims at making easier the access to data of the studied area. Photographs of typical soil profiles, geotechnical and field tests results have also been introduced in the database to allow a better characterization of the region. The application of this technology allows the access to the geotechnical database through a computational tool, GIS, and easy the dissemination of knowledge of the soils from the studied region.
