This paper aims to the detection of stator winding inter-turn short circuit fault in induction motors. Firstly, the numerical simulation of stator winding inter-turn short circuit fault is accomplished. Secondly, this paper points out that the stator winding apparent impedance angle can be viewed as the fault feature, and moreover, the lagging stator winding, adjacent to the faulty stator winding with inter-turn shorts, possesses the largest apparent impedance angle variation among the 3-phase stator windings, as allows to identify the faulty stator winding. Finally, the relevant experiments have been carried out, and the results obtained clearly validate the detection strategy. The further work will focus on refining the detection strategy and applying it to the industrial site.
