PULVERIZED COAL COMBUSTION DRY BOTTOM ASH FOR PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE RIGID PAVEMENTS

Tests were conducted to determine the extent to which Pulverized Coal Combustion (PCC) dry bottom ash, a by-product of coal-burning power generating industry, can be used in Portland cement concrete rigid pavements. Nearly 1800 kg/m~3 of concrete was used to pave an entrance road and two parking lots belonging to a sport complex. The PCC dry bottom ash concrete pavements were subjected to extensive engineering studies and monitored for approximately two years for short-, medium-, and long-term performance. The field results were also compared with those of the companion control pavement. Field cores, taken from paving slabs, were also tested for leaching of solid waste to obtain aqueous solutions which were used to determine the materials that could leach into groundwater under specific testing conditions.
