XPS and ToF-SIMS were useful to study the effect of water on the adhesive films deposited on both grit-blasted aluminium and GPS coated aluminium. These observations are in total agreement with the empirical observations: GPS treated aluminium provides an effective process to rival the conventional acid anodising pretreatments. Such performance would appear to be, in no small part, a result of the integrity provided by the interfacial chemistry of such a bonded system.
