Surface modification techniques play a key role in the development of new products, applications, and processes. Surface preparation is especially important for adhesive bonding, one of today's most important joining techniques with regard to the assembly of components based on advanced materials, e.g. light metals, ceramics or plastics. A good surface preparation is a must for strong, reliable, and durable adhesive joints. Surface modification with plasma assists in the preparation of materials in a wide variety of applications. Low pressure plasma technology has been developed in the last two decades and is increasingly applied in industrial processes. However, its real break-through has been prevented so far by the fact, that it is a vacuum process. This generally results in batch-processing and more or less forbids in-line processing.
