Nonwoven are used in a large number of coated and laminated fabric applications such as in upholstery backings, shoe components, safety equipments, luggage components and wall coverings. Because of the faster method ofproduction, it is economical to use nonwovens compared to other traditional fabrics. Nowovens can be produced bydifferent methods such as spunbonding, thermal bonding and needle punching. The structure and properties of someof the commonly used nonwovens will be discussed. Special emphasis will be given to spunbond fabrics frompolypropylenes based on our research at the Textile and Nonwoven Development Center (TANDEC) laboratory atthe University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
