Phase morphologies and carbon black (CB) filler phase distribution in BIMS/BR blends were evaluated using AFM and SEM. CB was pre-compounded in either BIMS or BR prior to mixing. Blends of CB-precompounded BR (BR/CB) and neat BIMS exhibit coarse morphologies due to a large viscosity mismatch. On the other hand, finer morphologies were observed in blends of BIMS/CB and neat BR where viscosities had a better match. Furthermore, it was found that CB filler size has a larger effect on blend morphology than does viscosity matching. It is suggested that finer CB particles may act as compatibilizers for BIMS/BR blends.
