Although in production for more than 50 years Rayon has not lost its attractiveness as yarn for rubber reinforcement. It's combination of properties makes it the best choice for the use in the carcass of high speed tires as well as for other tires where alternative reinforcement materials do not fulfill the requirements. Rayon's very low shrinkage and heat resistance makes it the optimal yarn also for the production and use of reinforced brake and radiator hoses. This paper shows the typical properties of technical Rayon in comparison with other reinforcement materials like Polyester, Nylon, Aramide and Steel. On basis of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) the lifetime performance of Rayon and Polyester in tires is discussed. The results show the superiority of Rayon for high demanding applications.
