A new, molded-in-color engineered polyolefin [INDURE橾 with enhanced scratch/mar resistance properties is introduced by Solvay for various exterior automotive applications. This new engineered polyolefin is a major step forward in the quest towards replacement of paint by molded-in-color plastics and incorporates significant innovations far beyond the usual minor, incremental alterations or addition of lubricants, slip additives, etc. Mar resistance is characterized through gloss retention measurements after abrasion in a crockmeter. Scratch resistance is characterized with the Ford 5-Finger scratch test and instrumented microscratch tester. A complete description of the penetration and residual scratch depth and width is obtained from the microscratcher. Modifications to the gravelometry paint test method SAE J400 are introduced to permit characterization of molded-in-color [MIC] samples for chip resistance.
