Calciumcarbonate is presented as a new biomaterial with the aim of accelerated resorption times in comparison to plasma-sprayed HAP-coatings as todays standard coating solution on orthopaedic implants. Plasma spraying of CaCO_3 has to be carried out carefully due to a decomposition temperature of 860°C. Nevertheless dense coatings with good adhesion to the implants could be produced. In-vitro and in-vivo tests confirm that plasma-sprayed and highly pure Calciumcarbonate is fully biocompati-ble showing similar in-vivo characteristics than Hy-droxyapatite within shorter periods of time. These results create the potential for the employment of plasma-sprayed CaCO_3-coatings for all kind of applications where fast fixation between bone and implant is desired. TLS Terolab Services, former SNMC, has patented material and coating procedure for the plasma-spray processing of CaCO_3.
