POWER QUALITY RESEARCH: AN ALTERNATIVE FOR POWER ENGINEERING EDUCATION

An increased importance of power quality issues in power systems motivates a closer look at research and education in power engineering. In this paper, results and simulations from recent power quality projects at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagiiez (UPRM) are presented. Student participation on a power quality survey increased their research skills and their interest in power engineering. Recommendations made in the project will guide future equipment installations at UPRM's ECE Department. A second project on the power quality impact of renewable energy sources is presented. A literature review and simulations of the power electronics interface enabled future plans for the implementation of a testing facility on photovoltaic systems. These projects show that the multidisciplinary nature of power quality presents an alternative to the education crisis in power engineering.
