There are severe requirements on the sulfate ion in the reactor water. The major sources of sulfate ion are total organic carbon (TOC) leached from strong acid type cation exchange resin (CER) charged into the condensate demineralizer system (CD). The leaching TOC from the CER contains polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS). In BWR plant, the leaching TOC will generate sulfate ion by thermal and radiation decomposition in the reactor. The TOC leaching rates of the cation exchange resins increase usually in use of time because of oxidizing degradation. On the other hand, sometimes there had occurred unexpected increase in reactor water sulfate ion assumed by the CER degradation. This paper describes the leaching TOC from the CER and influences on reactor water sulfate ion concentration.
