Over the course of the past two decades, development of fiber optic sensors has led to devices and systems which are able to measure over 60 different parameters. Perhaps even more noteworthy is the fact that commerially available fiber optic sensors are increasing in frequency and in actual deployment. It is a vibrant field with clear advantages over electron-based sensors in certain applications, particularly those where electromagnetic interference wreaks havoc. The focus of this paper has been to present the physical underpinnings for the light-guiding operation of fibers as well as an overview of the various fundamental field manipulation techniques that are used in fiber optic sensors.
