One of the missions of the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, Water and Wastewater Facilities Section is to perform water and wastewater treatment services for 1.5 million people in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The service area includes 300 square miles (780 square kilometer) including the entire City of Baltimore along with portions of Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, and Howard County. In order to accomplish water and wastewater treatment, the Bureau of Water and Wastewater operates the largest treatment system in the State of Maryland including over 30 pumping stations, two water treatment plants (360 mgd or 1, 370 ton/day), and two wastewater treatment plants (260 mgd or 950 ton/day). Wastewater is conveyed to the treatment plants by gravity or by pumping and undergoes a complex series of treatment steps in order to render the treated waste water safe for discharge to the Chesapeake Bay through either Back River or Patapsco River. Figure 1 shows a partial managerial organization chart of the Wastewater Facilities Section Maintenance Information and Management System.
