In the present study an attempt was made to develop controlled release delivery system for periodontal infections. Fibers loaded with the drug were prepared using coating method. Coating solution contained polymer namely polyvinyl acetate and drug amoxycillin trihydrate. The fibers were given five coatings in order to incorporate maximum amount of drug on the fibers. The coating composition was optimized and fibers were subjected to in vitro release studies. They provided sustained effect upto a period of 11 days. Continuous flow through apparatus simulating the in-vivo conditions of periodontal pocket was designed and it was found that drug level in pocket remained above its MIC value (1.5mcgml) for a period of 11 days. The in-situ release samples were further subjected to microbiological evaluation against microrganisms, which are implicated in oro dontal infections. When the optimized fiber was subjected to permeation rate studies through Bovine check pouch membrane, it was found that only little amount of drug permeated through the membrane.
