In this paper, a technology is described based on wet masterbatch of silica and silica/carbon black based on using blends of emulsion SBR with varying styrene content and molecular weight. The product exhibits improved wet traction and low rolling resistance without a sacrifice in the wear resistance. Factors investigated in this study include the effects of molecular weight, styrene content, and resin on the important tire tread properties. A comparative study of wet silica and silica/carbon masterbatches vs. dry mixing of emulsion SBR 1502 and solution SBR is also presented.
