New autodepositable organic coatings for bonding rubber to metal have been developed to provide a variety of performance enhancements compared to conventional bonding techniques. These coatings have been designed to provide excellent corrosion resistance, flexibility and toughness in addition to a cost savings for the customer. The application of these coatings requires specific processing techniques to enhance the performance. The metals to be coated go through a variety of processing steps which includes alkaline cleaning, acid pickling, immersion in the coatings, dehydration and curing. All of these processing steps have an impact on the performance of the system. This paper will focus on the effects that these process steps have on the performance of the coatings and compare them to conventional rubber to metal techniques.
