REACTIONS OF MgO AND MgCr_2O_4 WITH CALCIUM FERRITE BASED SLAGS AT 1300°C

Drop quench technique and rotating disk method have been used to investigate the solubilities and dissolution rates of MgO and MgCr_2O_4 in calcium ferrite based slags under oxygen potentials from 3.73 X 10~(-4) to 10~(-8) atm at 1300°C. Effects of copper oxide in the slags on the solubilities were also examined under a CO_2 atmosphere. The results showed that the solubilities of the two oxides in copper free calcium ferrite slags were low (MgO: ~ 2.0 wt% and MgCr_2O_4: ≤ 1.0 wt%), and varied with oxygen potential. Cu_2O in the slags tended to increase their solubilities under a CO_2 atmosphere. The dissolution rates of dense MgO and MgCr_2O_4 under an oxygen potential of 10~(-6) atm were found in the same order of magnitude, i.e. 1.4 ~ 2.3 X 10~(-6) g·cm~(-2)·s~(-1) at a rotation speed of 300 rpm. However, under an oxygen potential of 10~(-8) atm, the dissolution rate was approximately 40 times higher, e.g. ~ 6.1 X 10~(-5) g·cm~(-2)·s~(-1) for MgO. At the oxygen potential of 10~(-8) atm, in the case of MgO, the slag had attained saturation after one hour, while the MgCr_2O_4 refractory sample had totally disintegrated, implying physical erosion dominated wear. The intermediate phases formed at the interface showed a significant impact on the dissolution/erosion rates of these two oxides in calcium ferrite based slags.
