In order to obtain the optimum position of tundish weir and dam in the tundish at POSCO stainless steelmaking works, the water modeling experiments are carried out. Three-dimensional transient flow of molten steel, temperature distribution, and inclusion trajectory in a tundish are calculated using the standard κ - ε turbulence model using FLOW-3D. 1. The minimum residence time is increased by a factor of 1.6 and averaged residence time is increased by a factor of 1.4 for the use of dam and weir. 2. As the distance from the inlet to weir increase, minimum residence time and mean residence time decrease and dead flow volume increase. 3. From the results of the water model experiments, the isothermal and the buoyancy model, best geometry is T2AA and the second best geometry is T2Da tundish. It is note that inclusion removal should be affected by dam and weir geometry. 4. The larger inclusion particles are removed easily since the removal efficiency depends on the particle size. The efficiency of inclusion removal in T2Aa is higher than that of any other tundishes. 5. Applying the optimum dam and weir geometry designed by present study, surface quality of cold rolled coil have been improved
