The working group on the physics of high energy density at the 2000 Advanced Accelerator Conference (AAC2K) was envisioned to encompass many aspects of high phase-space density beam interactions with radiation, plasmas, solids, and their own collective fields. These include advanced beam diagnostics, cooling concepts such as ionization cooling, and acceleration and focusing of particle beams in plasmas. As the achieving of high energy density or intensity often implies that energy pulses in laser or particle beams are very short, this working group was also concerned with ultra-fast phenomena. These phenomena include the generation of femtosecond x-ray pulses from high-intensity laser-electron beam collisions (Compton light sources), and proton or other heavy ion acceleration in laser-target interactions.
