Saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifer systems inevitably leads to major impacts on the water resource, with long-term consequences such as degraded water supplies that become unusable for most agricultural, urban and domestic requirements. Saltwater intrusion has been a recurring issue in the Mackay coastal plains aquifer since the 1970s, with the problem worsening significantly during the drought period between 1992 and 1996. Various methods to monitor and manage saltwater intrusion have previously been utilised and a new more effective monitoring approach has been adopted.
