In today's competitive market and restructuring in all areas ofpower industry, it is important to apply products that meet technicalrequirements and operate with high reliability. Over-designing cannot bejustified if they add to the product cost. This paper suggests thatexisting overvoltage protection practices and surge arrestercharacteristics are sufficient for reliable overvoltage protection indistribution and low-voltage systems. Protected equipment failures thatoccur are not due to insufficient arrester energy capabilities butmostly due to improper application, most often related to excessivelylong lead lengths
